SCL CHAMPS!!!!

Highlights from SCL Championships:

Individual SCL Champion - Gabby Peterson dominated the field by winning in a whopping 37 seconds, and smashing her PR in 18:00 (previously from 18:40, and running 18:58 at this same meet last year). She was flying down the homestretch and really made a statement at this meet. She is now a 3 time SCL Champion.

Side note:

  • She ran faster than the NBL Champ Aimee Armstrong (18:40) and one of top empire girls in Sonoma County and Redwood Empire.
  • This is the first win for a Healdsburg girl since Sarah Sumpter - been 8 years since a Healdsburg girl has won SCL.
  • 2nd fastest Healdsburg girl on Spring Lake behind Sumpter

Varsity Boys WINNING the SCL pennant OUTRIGHT (we shared the pennant in 2000 & 2004) in over 19 years in an incredible team effort. We also got a SCHOOL RECORD for the fastest boys team EVER for a Healdsburg team, our team averaged a 17:01 per runner (spread over 7 runners for a team average of 1:25).

Eli Kroger, who has been a solid scoring runner had to sit out due to stress fractures in both of his legs. The odds were stacked against us heading into SCL without Eli running and knowing we would have to pull a major upset and our kids run the race of their lives to beat Piner. It was a MAJOR UPSET with us finally getting the win! Our kids ran the race of their lives and really outdid themselves.

The 3-4-5 punch of Andrew Magdaleno, Jonathan Ramirez and Luis Quezadas is what ultimately sealed our win over Piner (who had won 6 straight times before yesterday).  Diego Garcia surprised us the most by really stepping up and smashing his PR and getting a 7th place, and first team all league! Dante Godinez, has been so consistent and did his job incredibly well upfront by getting a 6th place and 1st team all league.

Side Note:

  • We have all 5 scoring runners be 1st team & 2nd team ALL LEAGUE
  • This is the fastest boys team ever produced by Healdsburg HS
  • We had all 5 boys under 17:11 (never been done before)

Hoot Owl Interlock & Ed Sias Invitational Recap

Very busy week for the HHS Hounds! We hosted a quad meet scrimmage at Hoot Owl this past Wednesday (9/7) with Rancho Cotate, Casa Grande and Montgomery (our home course) with 95 degrees race weather. Saturday (9/10) we traveled to Hidden Valley Park in Martinez for the Ed Sias Invitational.

On Wednesday, at the Hoot Owl scrimmage, Gabby Peterson picked up the win for the Varsity Girls race and won by over 2 minutes. The Bozeman sisters of Natalie (sophomore) and Emily (senior) seem to bode well together as they finished as our #2 & #3 girls. Rounding out the Varsity girls squad was newcomer freshman, Jessica Ortiz.

Although we can't "officially" score this meet, our Healdsburg Varsity boys would have won as a team, edging out Casa Grande (DII school)  by 4 points. Eli Kroger stepped up for us in a big way as our #2 runner on the team. Orion Johnson was the surprise of the day by taking 2nd in the JV race.

We  traveled to Martinez on Saturday (9/10) for the Ed Sias Invitational, held at Hidden Valley Park. There were 90 schools and 4100 runners. It's the biggest meet we have brought our team to thus far. Great competition and schools we will face off at NCS later in November.  Very hilly course and warm conditions.  We have some athletes who are battling some sickness & injuries so we weren't in top form, but it's still early in the season, and we want to get everyone as healthy as possible so we can compete when it counts.

Our next race is this upcoming Wednesday on 9/14 at Super Septo where we will be racing 8 teams, followed by the Viking Invitational 9/17 (2 miles).
